Welcome to the first Samurai presents DJ Mix, focusing on local talent, we aim to give up and coming DJ's the opportunity to have their mixes hosted here. DJ Blazem is a staple on Aucklands local underground scene and this was definitely the best of the mixes we received at Samurai HQ!
Self proclaimed of being 'genre confused' throughout the early years of life, until the sounds of Drum And Bass were heard,
this man was not musically satisfied.
Brought up influenced by his mothers reggae / dub record collection there was other genres of interest, most predominately
Hip Hop from the late 80's to the early 90's, UK rave / techno thru mid 90's to metal late 90's.
High School friends influenced heavy metal knowledge, to which bands like Rage Against The Machine and Biohazard, for
example, were most commonly listened to. The incorporation of 'Rapping' along with metal bands made inspiration to get
involved with a group of friends starting a band who were short of a vocalist, this became the first music orientated
partaking in life. Years of rhymes written more for Hip Hop, were to become used with the metal band, but as 'Teen' band
culture goes, didnt last long, only a handful of live performances were ever done, but the taste of music performance to
a live audience was not fulfilled.
Deciding to produce solo music to rap to, an Audio Engineering course was the best way to gain knowledge of audio / studio
production, as the software on the computer made no sense and the amount of ambition became intense. A year at SAE in
Auckland saw recordings of local Metal bands and Hip Hop crews.
At the same time, clubbing saw the introduction to DNB. Overwhelmed at the many different genre elements of this club
orientated music, rapping and hiphop production were more or less thrown aside to make way for the learning and interests
gained. Drum and bass became the only music of choice, whether it be clubbing, listeng to cds at home or producing beats
on the PC.
After many frustrating months of trying to get a satisfying sound from DNB production, it was decided that DJing would be
given a try, which was found to be more forgiving, and a talent was definately there. Perhaps many years of listening /
involvement in different music genres gave a better understanding to music structure, which djing is based on.
Mixing now since 2001, bLazem's bedroom tan is starting to dissapear. Having played many gigs over time and proudly,
most of the 'Urban Camouflage' parties of the last few years, 2006 saw the start of a weekly show on Base FM , and an
entry into NZ's only DNB mixing competition - Rumble in The Jungle.
Taking DNB very seriously, the home studio setup is not to be taken lightly, unless of course, your the next door neighbour.
